How much of your leadership runs without you?

Forget how many people follow you or how well you present. This is about whether the things you set up keep working when you're not in the room.

Eighteen questions across six domains, about four minutes. You get a number, the one domain holding the rest back, and the first thing to do about it. The number is a gate, so you can't average your way up. That's deliberate, and it's the only reason it's worth anything.

What makes this assessment different

It gates

You can't average your way up. One domain at zero holds the whole number down, because that's how it works in the building too.

It's blunt

It tells you which one of the six is holding the rest back, and the first thing to do about it. You get the real number, inflated for nobody.

It comes back

Write your number down. Take it again in ninety days and find out whether it moved.

The eighteen questions

Accountability

  • I have written down what I expect from each person who reports to me.
  • I go back and check on those expectations on a schedule, not only when something has already gone wrong.
  • The managers who report to me set and verify expectations with their own teams, and I hear about it after it is handled.

Time and focus

  • I know where my week actually goes, not where I assume it goes.
  • My calendar protects time for the work only I can do, and that time survives a busy week.
  • My team keeps the priorities straight when I am unreachable for a week.

Delegation

  • I have handed off work I used to do myself.
  • When I delegate, I hand over the outcome and the authority to decide, not just the task list.
  • There are decisions my team makes without me that I find out about afterward, and that is fine.

People

  • I can say honestly who on my team is an A, who is a B, and who is a C.
  • When someone misses, I work out whether it is a clarity problem, a resources problem, or a fit problem before I decide what to do.
  • The people I developed are now developing other people.

Self-awareness

  • I can name at least one thing I do that holds this business back.
  • I stay with a plan long enough for it to work, even when a better idea shows up.
  • Someone on my team can tell me I am the problem, and I actually hear it.

Culture and standards

  • We have core values that are specific to us, not the ones every company claims.
  • We score people against those values instead of hanging them on a wall.
  • My team holds the standard when I am not in the room, including when it costs us something.

Straight answers

Questions about the assessment.

What does this measure?
How much of your leadership runs without you pushing it. Six domains: Accountability, Time and focus, Delegation, People, Self-awareness, Culture and standards. Three questions in each one, and every one of them asks what's already happening in your building. This is your read of yourself. That's a limit. It's still the most useful number you'll get in four minutes.
Can I take it again?
Yes. I don't store your answers, so keep the email with your score in it. That's your only copy. Ninety days is a fair gap to see whether the whole number moved.
Do I have to be the owner?
No. Any leader can answer every question. A service manager and the person who owns the company can both take it, and they should.
Do I have to give you my email?
Yes, to see your score. I tell you that up front. Your score comes up the second you submit, and I send you a copy of it, because nothing here gets saved. A few follow-ups after that, then my weekly email. Unsubscribe whenever you want.
Why is my number stuck when I improved?
Because the whole number is a gate, not an average. The decimal moves when you improve one of the answers the next level actually needs. Your result screen names them. The integer moves when you've cleared the bar in every domain that level asks for. That's the point of it.
